Servers Alive Remote Agent for Unix/Linux/BSD/*nix

Introduction

The download file contains BINARY agents, C-source code and PERL code.
At install time you can decide what to install.

Binary agents are available for:

  • Debian 4.0(Sarge)/Debian 5.x (Lenny)/Debian 6 (Squeeze) on i686
  • Fedora Core 6 on i686
  • FreeBSD 6.2 on i386
  • Gentoo r7 on i686
  • Mandriva 2007 on i586
  • NetBSD 3.1 on i386
  • OpenBSD 4.0 on i386
  • Slackware 11 on i686
  • Ubuntu 6.1 on i686
For all (maybe most is a better word) other Unix/Linux/BSD based OSes you can use recompile the provided source (SRC) code version or use the PERL version.

Installation

Step 0
For the binary version make sure that one of inetd or xinetd is installed and running.
The source code uses GCC as compiler. It will also need the (x)inetd daemon to run.
The PERL version will use PERL and use the installed SSH server.

Step 1
uncompress the download file:TAR zxf woap-1.x.tar.gz
(on Solaris 10 you will need to do:
gunzip woap-1.x.tar.gz
tar xf woap-1.x.tar)

Step 2
cd woap-1.x

Step 3

  • Binary
(in the beta phase we recommand NOT use the binary versions)
    ./install <binary-name> ssh
    (protocol is 100% encrypted)
    or
    ./install <binary-name> telnet
(protocol is unencrypted<- we do NOT recommand to use this!!)

    Binary names:
    bin-debian-4.0-i686 (Debian 4.0/5.0/6.0)
    bin-fedora-6-i686 (Fedora Core 6)
    bin-freebsd-6.2-i386 (FreeBSD 6.2)
    bin-gentoo-r7-i686 (Gentoo r7)
    bin-mandriva-2007.0-i586 (Mandriva 2007)
    bin-netbsd-3.1-i386 (NetBSD 3.1)
    bin-openbsd-4.0-i386 (OpenBSD 4.0)
    bin-slackware-11-i686 (Slackware 11)
    bin-ubuntu-6.10-i686 (Ubuntu 6.10)

  • Recompile from the sources
    ./install src ssh
    (protocol is 100% encrpyted)
    or
    ./install src telnet
(protocol is unencrypted<- <- we do NOT recmmand to use this!!)

  • PERL version
    ./install src perl
    (protocol is unencrypted)

Step 4
in some cases a reboot of the system is needed!

Step 5
test if you can connect to it on port 20012
(telnet <ip> 20012)

Step 6
All is working fine now!

Tested and working fine
this shows the OSes on which we did test the remote agent and were able to make it work.

Binary version
Woodstone tested the binary version on

  • OpenBSD 4.0 (bin-openbsd-4.0-i386)
  • FreeBSD 6.2 (bin-freebsd-6.2-i386)
  • Slackware 11 bin-slackware-11-i686
  • NetBSD 3.1 (bin-netbsd-3.1-i386)
  • Fedora Core 6 (bin-fedora-6-i686)
  • Debian 4.0/5.0/6.0 (bin-debian-4.0-i686)

  • and found all of them working fine

    Source version (recompilation)
Woodstone tested the source code version on
  • CentOS 5.0
  • CentOS 4.4
  • CentOS 3.8
  • Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike)
  • Fedora Core 6
  • OpenSuse 10.2
  • Debian 3.1
  • Debian 4.0
  • Gentoo 2006.1
  • Ubuntu 6.1
  • Mandriva 2007

  • and found all of them working fine

    Open tests/issues

Woodstone is still working on the following tests:

  • PERL version on Solaris 10 (Intel)

  • If the OS you would like to use is in this list, it might well work on your system. This lists shows the tests that we're still working on (some fail due to the config of our test system).
If you're running an OS that is not listed on this page, then we suggest to try the SOURCE version and please let us know if it worked or not.

    Problems and solutions.

    Gentoo 2006
xinetd was not running on Gentoo
To (re)install xinetd: emerge --digest -av xinetd
Then comment out or remove the "only_from=localhost" line from the /etc/xinetd.conf file and restart the system.

    Ubuntu 6.1
xinetd was not running and the 'src ssh' install didn't work correctly.
Do a: apt-get install xinetd libssl-dev zlib1g zlib1g-dev make, after that an 'src ssh' worked fine. (this can be needed on Debian too)

    Debian 4.0/5.0/6.0
    xinetd was not running
Do a: apt-get install xinetd , after that an binary install worked fine. For a source install it might be needed to do: apt-get install openssl openssl-dev.

    OpenSuse - Redhat - CentOS - Fedora
    xinetd was not running
On http://www.rpmfind.net do a search for xinetd, download that file (via wget for example), then do a rpm -i <package-name> in order to install it. (or you could also do: yum install xinetd)

Depending on what is installed on the system you will also need to add zlib-devel and openssl-devel.
